Logo Design, Paleo Diet and Running a Dating Business

Another wide-ranging discussion at the Oahu Online Entrepreneurs meetup.  Logos, paleo diets, dating and Hong Kong were some of the topics on hand.

Logo Design

Our group turned out in big numbers for a talk at University of Hawaii about logo design.  Here are some extra resources to help.

10 Common Mistakes in Logo Design – If you avoid these, you’ve put your brand ahead of 90 percent of other starting entrepreneurs.

2012 Logo Trends – What’s hot in logos right now?  Find out in this article.  It has plenty of logo pictures as examples.

When Typography Speaks Louder Than Words – As a writer, my design bias is for typography and cool fonts.  This is the best article I’ve seen for how the right font can strengthen your message without overwhelming it.  Listen to how a message “sounds” when you read it in different fonts.  Typography can make a big impact.

Hipster Branding – Mentioned at the UH logo talk, this blog has “hipster” redesigns of well-known logos. How these logos would look if they reflected the sensibilities of cool, 20-something designers.

Paleo Diet Business

Jason Glaspey: Running a Membership/Subscription Site with WordPress – This video is a triple threat: it’s about paleo dieting, running a membership site as an online business, and it’s about WordPress (lots of tips on WordPress plugins).  Bonus: the guy applies a lot of the ideas in The Four Hour Workweek!  A little long, but worth watching.

BulletProof Exec – The overall theme of the site is “bio hacking,” doing extensive analysis and testing on your body to optimize it.  This blogger uses the paleo diet as a foundation for his own BulletProof Diet (with pictures).

Running a Dating Business

I am a Professional Dating Coach. Ask Me Anything – I’d wager the big market is nerdy, lonely guys.  Hear their requests for help, in their own words.

OKCupid Blog – Everyone has an opinion about what works in dating. But what does the data say?  OKCupid, a dating website, runs this blog where they share the results of their extensive data mining. Refreshing to read evidence-based information on this emotionally charged topic.

How Plenty of Fish Conquered Online Dating (hint: its founder works just one hour a day) – An extensive profile of Plenty of Fish founder Markus Friend. POF is a popular, free dating website. This is the best case study of passive income I’ve ever read. Frind ignores users who ask for more features, doesn’t update the website, and avoids hiring employees so he doesn’t have to manage anyone.

It’s a stark contrast to typical start-up stories, where the founders do programming all night fueled by Red Bull and pizza, and sleep under their desks. Frind only spent 10-20 hours a week on the site at the beginning, and now only works one hour a day. Our OOE member Andy put it best: “That’s not passive income. That’s comatose income!”

Moving to Hong Kong

One of our members has talked about moving to Hong Kong.

GeoExpat.com – This site is basically a Craigslist for expats in Hong Kong. Apartments, jobs and other stuff.

Hitting Hong Kong – Shameless self-promo. A story off my travel blog about visiting Hong Kong.

I’m a better teacher than anything else, except for removing computer viruses (martial arts really helped with that).

I began by specializing in senior citizens due to my background with seniors and the hearing health care industry. Now I realize all people need help from

“I was afraid to take it out of the box till you got here”

    To

“How do I add this formula to a spreadsheet?”

Due to meeting you folks twice I now feel more comfortable with sharing what I do best with all of you who do your thing best.

    Rick
